Laser tattoo removal works by using short laser pulses of a specific colour which are absorbed by tattoo ink but not surrounding normal tissue. These short pulses of laser energy cause the tattoo particles to heat and cool rapidly, leading to a shock wave which shatters the tattoo particles into smaller fragments, enabling the body’s immune system to more effectively clear these.
PicoSure’s ultra-short pulses create intense pressure waves which cause greater disruption of the target tattoo particles, resulting in much smaller fragments than can be achieved by current nanosecond Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers. These shattered ink particles are then more easily eliminated from the skin. The result is significantly better tattoo clearance with fewer treatments and also less energy and risk of injury to surrounding tissue. Even stubborn colours and previously-treated recalcitrant tattoos can now be removed.
The actual treatment will take only few minutes for small tattoos and longer for larger and more complex tattoos. Protective eyewear will be worn during the entire duration of the treatment. The immediate result upon laser impact is whitening (frosting) of the skin followed by mild short-lived redness. At the end of the treatment you will be instructed on how to care of the treatment area to minimise side effects.
The new PicoSure laser is very tolerable and less uncomfortable than conventional Q-switched lasers. The laser light pulses produced by the PicoSure laser has been compared to a rubber band being flicked against the skin. Chilled air (Zimmer) against the skin is used during the treatment for improved comfort, and while most people do not require anaesthesia, numbing creams and local anaesthetic are also available.
With the new PicoSure® laser, tattoos can be cleared with much fewer treatments compared to current Q-switched lasers; usually 2-6 treatments are required. The number of treatments required will depend on the amount, depth, and type of tattoo ink and the method of tattoo application, with amateur tattoos generally responding more readily than professional tattoos. Tattoo removal treatments are conducted at eight weekly intervals, so with the fewer treatments required with PicoSure, laser tattoo removal no longer needs to be a protracted process.
Tattoo removal using the PicoSure laser does not typically leave scars, although there is a small risk of this if you have a tendency to form abnormal scars or keloids. Test spots can be performed prior to treatment.
Unprotected sun exposure within one week of treatment, including the use of tanning beds or tanning products, such as creams, lotions and sprays may interfere with the laser treatment and should be avoided. Prior to actual treatment, remove all makeup, lotions, deodorant or oil from the area to be treated. After the treatment a mild sunburn sensation is often felt which is normal. Avoid sun exposure and use a 30+ SPF sunblock if sun exposure is unavoidable. Additional care will be discussed at the time of your visit.
PicoSure laser tattoo removal is clinically proven and FDA approved. In a clinical study, subjects with multicolored and recalcitrant tattoos that were treated with PicoSure over a two-week period demonstrated greater than 80% overall tattoo clearance.
